Keep Your Phone Working And Your Connection Warm In The Cold Outdoors: Tips From Verizon Wireless

BASKING RIDGE, NJ — With wintry weather making an early and frigid debut across the nation, Verizon Wireless, owner and operator of the nation’s largest and most reliable 3G network, offers the following tips to help consumers use their wireless phones when it’s cold outside:

Keep your phone fully charged. Cold temperatures can run down the phone’s battery charge more quickly. Use a car charger to keep the phone’s charge if you get stranded or stuck in traffic on icy or snowy roads. Think about an extra battery as backup.
Handle your phone with care. The display screen can become brittle when exposed to cold temperatures for long periods of time.
Keep your phone in a warm place; avoid leaving it in an outside pocket or backpack or in the car overnight. When outside in the cold weather, carry your phone in an inside jacket pocket, keeping it close to your body for warmth.
Remember you can’t dial or access the keyboard on a touch screen with gloves, so consider adding finger flip gloves to your winter holiday wish list.
Download free winter apps to your phone from Android Market™ such as:
Winter Weather Outlooks – Allows you access to the National Weather Service Winter Weather Outlooks, so you’ll know what kind of winter weather is headed your way.
How Cold Is It? – A wallpaper that changes color depending on the outside temperature – deep red when it’s hot and icy white when it’s freezing.
ShoppeHUB – This app allows you to make secure purchases on cold weather gear, including winter clothing.
Coffee Recipes – Choose from more than 90 easy coffee recipes that will be sure to keep you warm.

View from Verizon Wireless
“People across New Hampshire are increasingly relying on smartphones and 3G apps to manage their busy lives and stay connected at home or on-the-go,” said director for Network Systems Performance for Verizon Wireless, Richard Enright. “The $2.6 billion we’ve invested into our New England network has kept us ahead of consumer trends, provided our customers a 3G advantage and underscored our belief that any mobile device is only as good as the network it runs on. Proactive and sustained investment has made Verizon Wireless the 3G leader in New England and nationwide.”

Harnessing the Capabilities of a Robust 3G Network
Verizon Wireless’ 3G network powers many leading mobile multimedia services, including:

Mobile Broadband Internet Access: Notebook computer users can access e-mail, download files and browse the Internet at broadband speed, downloading a one megabyte e-mail attachment – the equivalent of a small PowerPoint® presentation or a large PDF file – in about eight seconds and uploading it in less than 13 seconds.
V CAST Video: V CAST multimedia services offer customers the ability to play cutting-edge 3D games and stream video clips straight to their phones, as well as to watch dozens of on-demand videos, including breaking news, weather, sports highlights and the hottest entertainment clips.
Sustained Wireless Investment
The company has invested more than $60 billion since its inception to increase the wireless voice and data coverage of its national network and to add new 3G services like Mobile Broadband and V CAST. As the carrier with America's largest and most reliable wireless network, Verizon Wireless cell sites in New England provide 3G wireless data connectivity.

Engineering America’s Most Reliable Wireless Network
The company’s ‘America’s most reliable wireless network’ reputation is based on network studies performed by test men and test women throughout the country. By traversing more than one million miles annually on Interstate, U.S. and state highways, as well as major roads and surface streets in high-population areas – the equivalent of two roundtrips to the moon or 40 trips around the world – the test men and women confirm that voice calls and data connections are successful on the first attempt and stay connected. Vehicles are equipped with computers that automatically make more than 3.5 million voice call attempts and more than 19 million data tests annually on Verizon Wireless' network and the networks of other carriers.

Valparaiso, Indiana, Residents To Benefit From Verizon Wireless Network Enhancement

VALPARAISO, IN — Verizon Wireless has activated a new cell site in Valparaiso, Ind., which improves voice and data coverage west of the city, including around Forest Park Golf Course and Ogden Gardens. Travelers will experience improved coverage when traveling on U.S. Route 30 towards Merrillville and on State Road 130 towards Hobart.

The new cell site, which is equipped with a permanent backup generator for times of emergency, empowers more Verizon Wireless customers to rely on their wireless phones for social networking, Internet browsing, downloading apps, exchanging e-mail and text, picture and video messaging as well as making calls.

“Our customers rely on their wireless devices for virtually all of their communication needs,” said T.J. Fox, president-Northwest Indiana/Illinois/Wisconsin Region, Verizon Wireless. “Ten years ago, ensuring they could make clear calls and stay connected was our top priority. That still is and always will be important. Additionally though, we closely monitor all other network usage, such as Internet browsing and downloading apps or music, and make improvements accordingly, so that our customers’ experience on our network is seamless regardless of how they want to use their phone.”

In addition to the ongoing investment in its 3G network, Verizon Wireless recently launched the world’s first large-scale 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network in 38 major metropolitan areas and 60 commercial airports. This initial launch covers more than 110 million people – more than one third of all Americans. By 2013, Verizon Wireless will have full nationwide 4G LTE coverage everywhere the Verizon 3G network is available today.

Verizon Wireless expects 4G LTE average data rates to be 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink in real-world, loaded network environments. These speeds are significantly faster than Verizon Wireless and other wireless providers’ current or promised 3G network speeds.

Verizon Wireless has invested more than $60 billion since it was formed – $5.7 billion on average every year – to increase the coverage and capacity of its premier nationwide network and to add new services. Since 2000, Verizon Wireless has invested $1.06 billion on improvements to its wireless network in Indiana.

Verizon Wireless Names Christine Berberich New England Region President

WILMINGTON, MA — Verizon Wireless has appointed Christine Berberich president of the company’s New England Region. Berberich succeeds Ken Dixon, who was recently named president of Verizon Wireless’ Midwest operations.

Berberich is responsible for leading retail and business sales, operations and customer satisfaction efforts for one of the largest regions in the company. Verizon Wireless’ New England Region is comprised of more than 2,000 employees and more than 700 points of distribution, including 125 company-operated Communications Stores across six states.

Verizon Wireless operates the nation’s largest and most reliable wireless voice and 3G network. Recently the company launched the nation’s fastest and most-advanced 4G LTE network across 38 metropolitan areas that cover 110 million people, locally in Metro Boston. 4G LTE delivers laptop users speeds up to 10 times faster than 3G networks, with average data rates between 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink.

Berberich joined Verizon Wireless in 1993 as a customer service supervisor in the Midwest, eventually rising to area vice president of Customer Service, leading a team of more than 6,000 dedicated call center professionals. Previously she prepared employees to deliver outstanding service and customer experiences as a director of training.

"Christine’s nearly two decades of customer service, operations and training expertise will serve her well in her new role leading our New England Region," said Northeast Area President Nancy Clark. "As a leader of a 6,000-strong customer care organization, Christine built a track record of driving results, from improving the customer experience to building operational excellence, a background that has prepared her well for her new assignment."

Berberich earned her bachelor’s degree in marketing at St. Louis University.

Verizon Wireless Expands 3G Network Coverage In Otsego County, New York

ONEONTA, NY — Verizon Wireless is investing in Otsego County and expanding its local coverage with a new cell site in Oneonta. The new site improves coverage and capacity along I-88 from Exit 13 to Exit 15, Route 7 from Route 28 to Mill Creek Road, and Route 205 from Route 7 to Airport Road.

This network expansion is part of the company’s aggressive multi-billion dollar network investment each year to stay ahead of the growing demand for Verizon Wireless’ voice and data services. The company has invested more than $60 billion nationwide since it was formed – $5.7 billion on average every year – and invested more than $100 million in Upstate New York in 2009.

In addition to ongoing investment in its 3G network, the company recently began rolling out its 4G LTE network in 38 markets nationwide, including Rochester and the New York City area.

“We’ve always believed even the most advanced device is only as good as the network it runs on. We continue to aggressively invest in our Upstate New York network to increase coverage and capacity for our customers, add new services like 4G LTE, and maintain our existing 3G network leadership,” said Gene Fassett, executive director of Network for Verizon Wireless’ Upstate New York Region.

Verizon Wireless recently earned recognition from J.D. Power and Associates for “Highest Call Quality Performance among Wireless Cell Phone Users in the Northeast.”

In addition to voice and wireless data services such as V CAST Video and V CAST Music with Rhapsody, the company offers Mobile Broadband, its high-speed wireless broadband network geared toward mobile professionals and business customers. In 4G LTE coverage areas, it provides average speeds of 5-12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2-5 Mbps on the uplink in real-world, loaded network environments. In 3G coverage areas, it provides average download speeds of 600 kilobits per second (kbps) to 1.4 Mbps, and average upload speeds of 500-800 kbps. Strong demand for Verizon Wireless’ services continued during the third quarter of 2010 as the company added nearly one million net new customers.

The company’s “nation’s most reliable wireless network” reputation is based on network studies performed by test men and women throughout the country. These engineers drive nearly 100 specially equipped vehicles more than 1 million miles annually on Interstate, U.S. and state highways, as well as major roads and surface streets. Test vehicles are equipped with computers that automatically make more than 3 million voice call attempts and more than 16 million data tests annually on Verizon Wireless’ network and the networks of other carriers.
